Ah, the famous mantra we’ve all heard – “Do what you love and love what you do.” It’s a classic, right? But have you ever noticed that when you’re doing what you love, you’re at your best? Your heart is in it, and the outcome takes care of itself. Pretty cool, huh?
Now, in our dynamic and modern world, we’ve gotta teach our young ones about Ikigai. It’s a Japanese concept that means “life with a purpose.” It sounds simple enough, but if you ask a child to find their life’s purpose, it might sound like gibberish to them! That’s where we come in – we’re here to help you find your child’s Ikigai. Let’s give them a life filled with passion and purpose, shall we? It might also serve as a way to reach your goals!
What is Ikigai?
Now, to unlock the secret to Ikigai, you need to identify four things.
First up, find a skill that you possess – maybe you’re a master Lego builder or an expert in solving puzzles.
Next, it’s gotta be something you enjoy doing – don’t choose something that feels like a chore!
Thirdly, there should be a need for your skills in the world – think about what people want or need from you.
And finally, it’s gotta be useful enough that you can earn some money from it – cha-ching!
As a teacher or a parent, the ultimate goal is to see our children grow up and find their Ikigai. We want them to pour their hearts and souls into their passions and dreams and live a life filled with purpose.
How can parents find Ikigai for their children?
Let’s face it – finding your Ikigai isn’t a one-day job! With school and after-school activities, our tweens’ time is precious. That’s why it’s up to us as parents and educators to create educational systems that connect academics and careers to give our tweens the best shot at finding their purpose.
Step 1 – Figure out what your child LOVES! Instead of asking them what they want to “be” when they grow up (which can feel pretty overwhelming!), let’s dive into what thrills them. What makes their heart sing? Is it music? Sports? Science? Once we understand their passions and interests, we can help them explore potential career paths that they’ll truly enjoy.
Step 2 – Discover what your child is GOOD at.
As parents and educators, we must create opportunities for kids to practice and develop their skills in areas of interest. By engaging them in tasks that allow them to continuously apply their learning, we can help them find their strengths. Let’s give our kids a chance to shine!
Step 3 – Find WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS.
This can be tricky because children may not understand the needs of the world. We can introduce them to basic concepts of goodwill by teaching sharing, empathy, and kindness. By engaging in work-based learning, they can identify the skills and abilities required to become useful resources for serving the world. Let’s teach them the power of giving back!
Step 4 – Introduce FINANCIAL literacy.
Help them understand the value of money and how to achieve things through earning and saving. Children might take time in identifying their needs and wants. Encourage them by rewarding their talents, good deeds, and interests. By striking a balance between income and quality of life, we can prepare them for a bright future.
In a VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous) world, Ikigai provides a beacon of light and hope. By helping children identify their passions, talents, and the needs of the world around them, we can empower them to become agents of positive change in their communities and beyond.
